Malaria deaths worldwide continued to remain above pre-pandemic levels, with a slight decrease from 619,000 in 2021 to 608,000 in 2022, according to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recently released 2023 World Malaria Report. In 2022, there were an estimated 249 million malaria cases, an increase of 5 million cases compared to 2021. This year’s report, for the first time, included a chapter on the intersection of climate change and malaria.

Despite the myriad challenges the global community faces in the fight against the disease, including drug and insecticide resistance and the emerging impact of climate change, PMI is proud to contribute to the 11.7 million lives saved and over 2 billion cases of malaria averted since 2000. PMI will continue to use data driven approaches, and leverage existing and emerging tools to end malaria faster.
