PBS NewsHour features PMI’s Success in Cambodia

PMI was highlighted for its work on malaria elimination and drug resistance in a January 11 broadcast of PBS NewsHour. As part of the Under-Told Stories Project, special correspondent Fred de Sam Lazaro interviewed two PMI-supported Village Malaria Workers (VMW), Cambodia Malaria Elimination Project Director Sharon Thamgaduraia and PMI/USAID Foreign Service National Rida Slot.

“Despite the intensified resistance to malaria treatment, the country has successfully reduced malaria transmissions. And then we are proud to say that they’re moving toward malaria elimination,” Rida tells the reporter.

Part of the segment focuses on a PMI-supported pilot program in Western Cambodia that funds VMWs, as well as a rapid detection and reporting program to track and contain outbreaks, especially any cases that do not respond to drugs. Reaching migrant farmworkers in remote is a particular focus of the pilot.
