15 Years of Fighting Malaria and Saving Lives
15 Years of Fighting Malaria and Saving Lives
June 30, 2020 marked the 15th anniversary of the launch of the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative and the beginning of a year-long celebration of PMI’s leadership in the fight against malaria.
When President George W. Bush launched PMI in 2005, his goal was to save lives, give children the gift of a healthy childhood, and break the cycle of disease and poverty in places where malaria hits hardest. Led by USAID and co-implemented with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, PMI has become one of the U.S. government’s greatest development success stories.
Together with its partners, PMI has saved millions of lives–most of them pregnant women and young children–and contributed to substantial gains in education,
productivity, and economic development. In addition, PMI has worked with partner countries to build capacity and systems to combat malaria, which also equip them to better respond to other public health threats, and help keep America and the world safer.
