Elimination
Shrinking the malaria map
Over the past century, more than 100 countries, including the United States, have eliminated malaria from within their borders.
While most PMI partner countries in sub-Saharan Africa continue to focus on control and further reduction of malaria deaths, a subset of PMI-supported countries have made tremendous progress in reducing malaria and are now building the systems required to move beyond control towards elimination.
As countries approach elimination, they must adapt some of their previous approaches to malaria and PMI supports their responsiveness and innovation.
For instance, entomological monitoring must become more dynamic. Populations disproportionately affected by malaria – such as migrants and forest workers – must be reached. Areas at increased risk for malaria must be pinpointed and mitigated. Intervention packages must be tailored for different areas based on their unique malaria data, social behavior change considerations, and environmental characteristics.
