The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) welcomes Dr. Kenneth Staley as the new Global Malaria Coordinator, responsible for the strategy and implementation of the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI).
While PMI, together with global partners, exceeded the ambitious goal of reducing malaria mortality by half, from 2000-2015, we still have a long way to go. Malaria continues to cause unacceptable levels of death and suffering, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where a child dies every two minutes because of the disease. I look forward to working with Dr. Staley to continue the fight to end malaria.
Over the past twelve years, PMI, led by USAID and implemented together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the U.S. Department for Health and Human Services, has worked with partner countries and countless communities burdened by malaria to drive progress in fighting the disease. Together, we will continue to invest with national governments, multilateral organizations, local partners, and faith-based groups to prevent and treat malaria interventions around the globe.
